The Emasculation of America

It's as though our modern liberal democracy is so porous and malleable, so rife with insecurity and uncertainty, that we aspire-perversely-to the fascist certainties of our Jihadist adversaries. The victim takes on the jailor's persona.

We worry more about sleep deprivation for the 241 hardened terrorists at Guantanamo than we do about the two million innocents butchered recently in the Congo. We rail against humiliating self-admitted murderers by-gasp!-handling Korans without gloves; by using loud noises, isolation or cramped confinement; and by holding faces immobile. In other words: by using the same intense interrogation techniques employed by our British and French (and certainly many other) allies without tortured (pun intended) public discussions.

We flagellate ourselves and prostrate ourselves before those who call for our destruction, apologizing for these indiscretions and justifying our own murder. We hold ourselves (but none others) to standards no civilization before us has considered even remotely possible.

We pledge to negotiate as equals with Iran and Syria, two medieval autocracies that stone women (Iran), incarcerate children (Iran and Syria) and eliminate opposition (Syria)--no Geneva Convention anywhere in sight. We bow before the Saudi king, whose regime allowed female students to burn to death rather than let them escape the flames inappropriately dressed, which beheads disbelievers and amputates the limbs of everyday thieves.

The world is rife with genocide, with indiscriminate torture of the innocent and the young.

Yet our human rights movements, women's rights movements, and our ACLUs spend their time and resources railing against every transgression by our military and those who make us safe-as imperfect as that process may be?

Why are we emasculating ourselves?

Do we believe that if we defang ourselves, make ourselves vulnerable, weak and fearful, we will engender understanding and support from those who wish us ill? Will emasculation reduce their jealousy and their hate? If we berate ourselves, humiliate our defenders publicly in court, weaken our defenses and our interrogation techniques, will we gain the love and the admiration of Ahmadinejad, of Al Qaeda, of the Taliban? If we continue to hate ourselves enough, to belittle our culture of freedom and individualism, will we sufficiently reduce our hard-won differences, our unique and ennobling values, to pacify the radical Islamists?

Such is our 21st century sociology of capitulation: we must beat our swords into ploughshares and validate Shariah law in every court before we can be prideful as Americans. Are we compulsive lemmings rushing leftwards into the suicidal sea? When will our emasculation end?

Mr. Sacks, you are about the only voice of sanity in this vast wilderness...what you are saying is just so damn right and correct. Brilliant as usual.

Dear Leslie,
Excellent analysis, but so disheartening that America is losing its values and eventually will lose its freedom unless something changes.
All the best,
Gary

I am so sorry to say: Your analysis is right on target. We are self-destroying lemmings, priding ourselves “what good people we are!”

It took me quite a while to distill it down to the core: What makes liberals be the perverse beings they are? And it is the “desire to be good people”, coupled with sufficient brain-damage to not understand, what “good” means!

Weird! Sad! Cheers anyway

Leslie,

I stand here at next to my computer clapping my hands as I give you a standing ovation. Bravo is too tame a word of praise, my God how you have nailed it all in so few words. Would that this piece could be read by all Americans.

If i were younger i would not hesitate for a second to defend my country. I am going to forward your message to all my friends. THANK YOU.John

Nice piece. Here's one possible answer to your question: Liberals are obsessed with, Who am I? while conservatives ask, Who are they? Liberals kowtow to evil because they are more concerned with how they feel about themselves. In other words, it's not about the terrorists-- it's about THEM.
Conservatives, as a rule, don't suffer from that fatal narcissism. They see evil and they want to get rid of it. They don't see evil as an opportunity for self-improvement.

Very well put, and I agree with you. But haven't these always been the problems of democracy vs. tyranny? Shakespeare dealt with these problems in Hamlet. He is a just man, who cannot deny another human being, even if it may be his father's murderer, due process. It's easy for the Claudiuses and the Fortinbrases of this world to send men to their deaths by thousands. But Hamlet can't bring himself to kill even one man, because he's a humanist. And Sophocles, in Antigone, explores the same debate between Antigone, the human rights activist and Creon, the totalitarian ruler who claims that law and order is more important than individual liberty and human rights.
So yes, our press is biased and no longer free and impartial... and that is ultimately the source of the imbalance you describe, in my opinion.

talk about conflating disparate issues, confusing institutional terms such as regime with an act, and failing to see the obvious contradictions in your arguments (bowing before a saudi king is awful - as you say - because that regime beheads non believers and amputates people yet you had/have no qualms about doing business with them, establishing embassies there...and treating the family as personal friends as did the Bush-men). put a lid on it.

Leslie,

While, in a sense there is no new news here, I think the emasculation angle is fascinating and deadly accurate. I have been aware of the feminizing of our society for some time now, but never quite looked at the phenomenon in macro-political way. Very illuminating. Thank you.

There is a hormonal component to this. Obesity turns men into sissies. Many men today have man boobs aka moobs. Moobs will not develop unless there is a lot of estrogen present. Fat women tend to become masculine. Both sexes seem to morph into strange androgynous forms as the reach morbid and super morbid obesity.

Testosterone increases the sense of self esteem. There are two articles on my blog that present data showing that fat women have higher self esteem than the general population.

The fat acceptance movement and the feminist movement are now pretty much one in the same. The fat acceptance movement is comprised almost entirely of women who like to portray themselves as tragic victims of evil men and all men are evil. What these strident man hating psychos forget in that there are more fat men than fat women.

This is an interesting piece of he puzzle that may explain some of what is happening.
