Many states had already seceded, and Jefferson Davis had already been elected president of the Confederacy. Yet there was Lincoln, still temporizing with the slavemasters. In fact, many did excoriate his speech for its spirit of compromise in pursuit of a highly improbable peace. Of course, most historians now give Lincoln credit for seeing a larger picture at that critical time.
